Government Official Says MoD Looking at Security Risk from Chinese Cars, with Personnel Told to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defense official has stated that the MoD is currently looking into the potential threats associated with Chinese-made cars, while personnel have been told to refrain from talking about classified matters in all cars.

Safety Advice for MoD Staff

In a recent interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to talk about classified information while riding in China-made cars.

He said that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however emphasised that safety is a concern in all modern cars.

We have a collection of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
However whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using every cars from China, the minister replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Wider Defence Context

The announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and cause disruption to public transit.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.

This broader security situation highlights the significance of robust measures and vigilance in all aspects of official operations, from vehicle usage to communication habits.
